If you are a digital marketer, SEO professional or doing SEO for your company, you are more likely to face this question: how many keywords should you focus on per page we understand as this question doesn’t have a particular answer that can be suited for all the people out there.

The first factor that determines the number of your keywords on your website is the size of your website as well as your business. If you have a small business offering limited services and products, you should consider targeting fewer numbers of keywords for your website – around 2 to 3 keywords per page.
But on the other hand, if you have a larger website having multiple pages and varieties of services, you can consider targeting 4 to 5 keywords per page.
Type of Keywords:
There are mainly two types of keywords in SEO: Primary and secondary. Primary keywords are those that have higher search volumes and secondary keywords are those which can be combined with the main keywords.
For example, if you are choosing “digital marketing services” as your main keyword, “digital marketing services in Canada” and “digital marketing services at the best price” can be treated as secondary keywords.
Other than these two factors, you also need to consider multiple other factors like page authority (PA), domain authority (DA) and popularity of your website and business. Having higher PA, DA, and popularity of your website makes it easier for you to get more backlinks to your website and thus you don’t need to emphasize your too much on your keywords.
Other things to keep in mind while deciding the numbers of keywords on your website:
Targeting the same keywords for multiple pages:
One thing you should keep in mind while choosing the keywords for your website selecting the same keywords for all the pages of your website. There is one concept in SEO known as keyword cannibalization which demonstrates the idea of using too many keywords on a single page or having the same keywords for multiple pages of your website.
When your site gets caught in keyword cannibalization, your own site competes with itself for the keywords you are targeting and thus it harms the rankings of your website.
The second major thing that you should keep in mind is keyword density while writing the content of your website. Having too many and too few keywords will do no good to your website rankings and all of your efforts will be in vain.
If you are publishing your content on major search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing; having 2 to 3% of keyword density is considered as the standard keyword density to follow. Having more than 2 to 3% of keyword density in your content leads to keyword stuffing followed by plenty from Google and other search engine platforms.
Length of Content:
As discussed above keyword density, the length of content matters when you are deciding how many keywords to add to your page. If you are writing short-form content of around 500 words then including two to three keywords is enough to have in your content but if you are writing long-form content like articles, and blogs of 1000 or 1000+ words then including four and five keywords are enough to have.
The Type Of Page:
Another factor that you need to consider while deciding the number of keywords per page is the type of website page. Say for example, if you are writing a home page content you can have fewer keywords than service page content. Generally, service pages have three to four keywords while the home and about us page has merely one to two keywords with them.
The Potential Of The Page To Rank For Keywords:
One thing we all need to keep in mind is the potential of a page to rank for keywords. If your website and pages are well optimized for SEO purposes. If your page is well-optimized, it can be ranked for multiple keywords and even for keywords, you may not be targeted directly.
If the keywords you are targeting have similar queries, your page can rank for those keywords too and this way you are targeting multiple keywords without targeting them directly.
To explain this even further, we can say that if you are targeting the keyword “digital marketing”, your page can also rank for the keywords like “digital marketing services” “digital marketing courses” and “digital marketing solutions”, based on the content and backlinks you have.
Having two to three keywords on a page is fine according to Google and other search engine optimization standards. In case you have long-form content like blog posts and articles, four to five keywords are good to go with.
Moreover, other factors like the size of your website/business, keyword cannibalization, keyword density, length of content, the type of page, and the potential of the page to rank for the keywords matter a lot while deciding how many keywords you should focus per page.
